IRAQI dictator Saddam Hussein planned an audacious military assault on a United States-funded radio station in the heart of Prague, the Czech intelligence service has disclosed.Using a rocket-launcher and assault rifles, Iraqi agents were to launch a deadly attack on Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty from a neighbouring building because of Saddam's anger over its Iraqi language service.

The Czech Security Information Service said the agents, posing as diplomats, had smuggled through diplomatic channels an RPG-7 rocket-launcher, six assault rifles, pistols and 2,000 rounds of ammunition.

Officials said the attack would have undoubtedly resulted in fatalities. At the time, the radio station occupied officers in central Prague, close to the main railway station, an opera house and the national museum.

Czech intelligence became aware of the plan in 2000 after it intercepted a message from Baghdad to an Iraqi spy in Prague, but it was unsure when the attack was due to take place. In 2001, the Czech government expelled an Iraqi diplomat for spying. A further five were expelled in 2003.
